Alchemy question

I just began doing more transmutes due to trying to gather all the mats for the Vial of Sands recipe. My question is: what's up with the random cooldown times? The other day I started and had a 4 hour cd, then 7 hours, then it went to 24 hours. After that cd it went to 5 hours and then up to 15. I really don't get it.
